Resumo No presente estudo, a ecotecnologia de ilhas flutuantes artificiais (IFAs) colonizadas por Eichhornia crassipes foi testada como uma ferramenta para a melhoria da qualidade da água de viveiros de peixes. O experimento foi realizado em sistemas de produção semi-intensivos durante o período de crescimento de tilápia, compreendendo um ciclo de produção. Foi completamente randomizado com dois tratamentos (com e sem IFAs) e três repetições. A temperatura da água, oxigênio dissolvido (OD), condutividade elétrica, pH, turbidez, sólidos totais dissolvidos (STD), transparência da água (Secchi) e concentrações de clorofila a (CL a), nitrogênio total (NT), nitrogênio amoniacal total (NAT), fósforo total (PT), ortofosfato (P-PO4 3) foram analisados quinzenalmente nos viveiros. Dois grupos ordenados com base nas características ambientais foram formados por meio da aplicação da análise de componentes principais (70,68% de explicabilidade). Aos viveiros com IFAs foram atribuídos maiores valores de Secchi e menores valores de pH, turbidez e STD e das concentrações de CL a, NT, NAT, PT, P-PO4 3-. Aos viveiros sem IFAs foram atribuídos os maiores valores dessas variáveis, exceto Secchi. Em 30 dias, viveiros com essas variáveis apresentaram as menores concentrações de PT e P-PO4 3-, e para CL a, NT e NAT, as diferenças foram registradas após 90 dias. O uso de IFAs tem demonstrado alto potencial para manutenção da qualidade da água adequada para a produção de peixes, notadamente para elementos biologicamente assimiláveis (ortofosfato e nitrogênio amoniacal) e para aqueles diretamente relacionados à eutrofização (fósforo total, nitrogênio e Secchi). A tecnologia de IFAs deve ser encorajada para pequenos e médios produtores rurais como ferramenta para melhorar a qualidade da água de viveiros de piscicultura. Contudo, novas taxas de cobertura de IFAs devem ser avaliadas, com cuidado, bem como o controle das taxas de retenção hidráulica, para promover melhorias mais significativas na qualidade da água, sem prejudicar a produção de peixes.

Abstract In this study, the ecotechnology artificial floating islands (AFIs), colonized by Eichhornia crassipes, have been tested as a tool for water quality improvement of fishponds. The experiment was carried out in semi-intensive production during the grow-out period of Nile tilapia, comprising one production cycle. It was completely randomized with two treatments (with and without AFIs) and three replications. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), transparency (Secchi) and concentrations of chlorophyll a (CL a), total nitrogen (TN), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), total phosphorus (TP) and orthophosphate (PO4 3--P) were analyzed fortnightly in the fishponds. Two groups ordered based on environmental characteristics were formed by applying the Principal Component Analysis (70.68% of explicability). The fishponds with AFIs were assigned to higher values of Secchi and lower values of pH, turbidity, TDS and concentrations of nutrients. On the other hand, the fishponds without AFIs were assigned to the highest values of these variables, except for Secchi. In 30 days, the AFIs showed the lowest concentrations of TP and PO4 3--P, and for CL a, TN and TAN, the differences were recorded after 90 days. The use of AFIs has demonstrated potential to conserve water quality in fishponds, notably for biologically assimilable elements (PO4 3--P and TAN) and for those directly related to eutrophication (P and N). Artificial floating islands should be encouraged for small and medium-sized farmers as tool to improve water quality in fishponds. However, new AFIs coverage rates must be evaluated, as well as the control of hydraulic retention rates.

Resumo Objetivo O presente artigo visa avaliar quais as espécies podem ser descritores biológicos e avaliar as mudanças na comunidade fitoplanctônica durante a etapa final de crescimento de tilápia-do-Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus 1758), relacionando com o manejo de produção e com as variáveis limnológicas. Métodos Amostras da água de abastecimento e do centro do viveiro foram utilizadas para as análises limnológicas e para avaliar estrutura da comunidade fitoplanctônica. Resultados No viveiro de piscicultura, registramos aumento de 1.5 vezes nas concentrações de nitrogênio e sólidos totais suspensos e na ordem de 2 vezes incremento de fósforo comparado com a água de abastecimento. Durante o ciclo de produção (113 dias), foram registrados 134 táxons distribuídos em 10 classes taxonômicas. Chlorophyceae (60 táxons) e Cyanobacteria (26 táxons) foram as classes com maior riqueza e abundância de espécies. Os maiores biovolumes foram registradas no centro do viveiro. Espécies nanoplanctônicas foram as mais abundantes e representaram 35% das espécies descritoras da comunidade fitoplanctônica do centro do viveiro. Conclusões A instabilidade do sistema, quanto ao controle do tempo de retenção hidráulica como consequência do método de criação utilizado, favoreceu a presença de espécies com pequenas dimensões celulares. Os decréscimos de temperatura do ar e da água registrados na etapa final de crescimento possivelmente favoreceram o aumento e manutenção das diatomáceas.

Abstract Aim Our objectives were to recognize species that can serve as biological descriptors and evaluate the changes in the phytoplankton community throughout the grow-out period of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus 1758) related to management practices and to limnological variables. Methods Samples from the inflow water and the fishpond were collected for the analysis of limnological variables and the structure of the phytoplankton community. Results In the fishpond, we registered a 1.5 times increase in nitrogen and total suspended solids and a 2 times increase in phosphorous compared to the inflow water. During the grow-out period (113 days), 134 taxa belonging to 10 taxonomic classes were registered. Chlorophyceae (60 taxa) and Cyanobacteria (26 taxa) showed the greatest diversity and abundance of species. The largest biovolumes were recorded in the fishpond. Nanoplanktonic species were the most abundant and represented 35% of the descriptor species in the phytoplankton community of the fishpond. Conclusions The instability of the system associated with the control of the hydraulic retention time as a consequence of management practices, favored the presence of species with small cellular dimensions. The decrease in air and water temperature registered at the end of the grow-out period probably favored the increase and persistence of diatoms. RESUMO Apresentamos as características morfológicas de populações de Isthmochloron neustonica bem como, sua abundância e a relação com algumas características ambientais em tanque de piscicultura. Trata-se do primeiro registro da espécie para o Estado de São Paulo e segunda citação para o Brasil. Isthmochloron neustonica foi descrita com hábito neustônico e no presente estudo, com amostragem para análise do fitoplâncton, foi registrada com elevada densidade, caracterizando floração de curta duração (intervalo de tempo de 15 dias), representando 59% da densidade total fitoplanctônica em 26 de maio de 2010, formando sobre a superfície da água uma película delicada e brilhante, em ambiente com alta concentração de nutrientes e no período seco e baixa temperatura. A espécie apresenta distribuição geográfica restrita a América do Sul, provavelmente em função de suas características biológicas, como células de pequeno tamanho e hábito neustônico, os poucos registros na literatura, pode dificultar a identificação e o registro da espécie em ambientes subtropicais.

ABSTRACT We present the morphometric characteristics of Isthmochloron neustonica populations as well as their abundance and the relationship with some environmental characteristics in a fishpond. This is the first record of the species in São Paulo State and second citation to Brazil. Isthmochloron neustonica was described in neustonic habit; in this study, with sampling for phytoplankton analysis, it was found in high density and short duration blooming (time interval up to 15 days). It represented 59% of total phytoplankton density on May 26, 2010, forming a delicate and bright film on the water surface, in an environment with high concentration of nutrients and associated with drought and low temperature. The species has a restricted range in South America, probably due to their biological characteristics, such as small cell size and neustonic habit. Few records in literature can also be one of the reasons that hampers the identification of the species in subtropical environments.

Dos vários aspectos inerentes à aquicultura, a eutrofização devido ao manejo alimentar tem efeitos diretos no viveiro e no sistema aquático no qual ele está inserido. Neste contexto, o presente estudo objetivou analisar a qualidade da água do sistema aquático de um viveiro. Em uma criação de tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), foram realizadas coletas de água em seis pontos do sistema aquático, durante um ciclo de engorda (seis meses), compreendendo a água de abastecimento, o viveiro, o efluente e sua mistura com as águas do sistema. Das variáveis ambientais analisadas nas amostras, a aplicação de uma análise de componentes principais revelou que as concentrações de clorofila-a, nitrogênio e fósforo total e o teor de matéria orgânica foram responsáveis pelas variações observadas no sistema durante o cultivo. Variações extrínsecas ao viveiro de cultivo deixaram evidente que o manejo deve ser aplicado a todo o sistema aquático, minimizando efeitos ambientais negativos.

Aquaculture is composed of various themes of interest, particularly does eutrophization due to feeding have direct effects on fish ponds and the whole aquatic system. This study focused on the study of the water quality of an aquatic system related to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) rearing. Sampling was done at six sites during one rearing cycle (six months), taking water from the source of water supply, the fish pond itself, the effluent of the fish pond and the mixed waters. A principal component analysis revealed that, among all the environmental variables analyzed, chlorophyll-a, total nitrogen and phosphorus and organic matter were responsible for the variations observed during the rearing cycle. Other sources of variability extrinsic to the fish pond make it evident that the assessment must take the entire aquatic system related to the rearing into consideration, minimizing negative effects.

Usando como base de informações a monografia sobre o grupo publicada pelo projeto Flora Ficológica do Estado de São Paulo (Programa BIOTA), o acervo depositado no Herbário Científico do Estado de São Paulo "Maria Eneyda P. Kauffmann Fidalgo" (SP), a Lista de Espécies da Flora do Brasil e artigos científicos, dissertações e teses (com descrições e ilustrações) temos: nove gêneros e 39 espécies de criptoficeas, sendo 16 espécies exclusivas para o Estado de São Paulo, todas registradas em ambientes de água doce. A carência de especialistas no Estado de São Paulo e no Brasil, além de problemas de estratégia amostral, necessidade de uso da microscopia eletrônica e ausência de estudos de biologia molecular, são fatores que devem ter subestimado o conhecimento taxonômico de Cryptophyceae no Estado.

Based on the information provided by the monograph on the group published by the project Phycology Flora of São Paulo (BIOTA), the collection deposited in the Scientific Herbarium "Mary P. Eneyda Kauffmann Fidalgo " of the State of São Paulo, the List of Endangered Species of the Flora of Brazil and scientific papers, dissertations and theses (with descriptions and illustrations), there are nine genera and 39 species of cryptophytes, 16 of which are unique species to the State of São Paulo, all recorded in freshwater environments. The lack of specialists in the State of São Paulo and Brazil as well as problems in the sampling strategy, the necessary use of electronic microscopy and the absence of molecular biology studies are factors that must have underestimated the taxonomic knowledge of Cryptophyceae in the state.
